Working in collaboration, the agencies required a series of animated videos and complementary resources to explain employee pay and entitlements, enterprise agreements and the process of enterprise bargaining.

Our goal was to help all Australian employers and employees understand and engage with the Fair Work system.

The FWC initially conducted discovery research to determine employer and employee knowledge of bargaining, with a focus on small business. This research found that many participants had limited understanding of the foundational concepts of agreement making and bargaining, with almost all participants stating they’d find animated explainer videos useful.

The resulting sharp educational videos are designed to help viewers feel more equipped to engage in bargaining and agreement making processes.

Understanding employee pay and entitlements breaks down the basics of the Fair Work system by representing it as stack of building blocks, visually demonstrating the foundations upon which contracts, awards and agreements are built.

Understanding enterprise agreements uses animated characters to illustrate the agreement making process.

Understanding bargaining follows a similar visual style, showcasing the steps, considerations and parties involved in bargaining for an enterprise agreement.

Character illustrations are heavily stylised, with oversized limbs and eye-catching clothing to create a heightened, inclusive look. Designs introduce diversity through gender, ability and race to ensure videos resonate with a broad Australian audience.

As with other e-learning content produced for the FWC on interest-based bargaining and workplace sexual harassment, videos feature both male and female voice overs with a soft, encouraging tone. Each explanation is five to seven minutes, providing a comprehensive overview without requiring long attention spans. To increase accessibility, videos are also captioned in Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Hindi, Japanese and Spanish.

The visual style is inspired by Neo Brutalism, containing minimalist key lines, geometric structures and sharp contrasts. Colours combine branding from both agencies, with shades of blue, teal and yellow creating a dynamic yet friendly look and feel. Graphics and icons utilise subtle patterns and textures to create variety and depth within the palette.

To support the videos, there are also five accessible resources summarising key points, available for anyone to download from the FWC and FWO websites. These are supplied as both branded PDFs and screening documents for people with vision impairment.

General Manager of the Fair Work Commission, Murray Furlong, says that these research-backed resources provide concise, engaging information about bargaining and agreement-making that is easy to access and share across organisations.

“I am consistently impressed by the work of The Being Group and their ability to translate our requirements into resources that meet the diverse needs of our users, employing timeless, inclusive and visually engaging design. Together with the Fair Work Ombudsman, we look forward to sharing these with the community and building understanding of pay, entitlements and the agreement-making process.”
