Lung Foundation Australia’s approach to improving lung health outcomes includes education for patients and their carers (consumers), and health professionals.

E-learning modules are designed to meet the needs of two distinct audiences.

Breathlessness education package

In partnership with other leading respiratory health organisations and funded by the Department of Health and Aged Care, Lung Foundation Australia’s education packages for the primary healthcare workforce aim to ensure the delivery of best-practice care for people with Chronic Airways Disease. The first to be developed was a self-paced healthcare e-learning module exploring evidence-based methods for identifying and assessing breathlessness.

For an audience of busy healthcare professionals, e-learning design prioritises ease of use and an engaging educational experience, despite tight delivery timeframes and significant technical information to be covered.

In a tablet-first approach, design optimises the use of space to ensure slides with large paragraphs of text feel balanced and manageable.

Utilising copy supplied by Lung Foundation Australia and refined by BEING learning consultants, an effective learning journey is provided through a balance of text, audio, animations and interactivity. Key lessons are presented to learners through the lens of a patient case study and multiple-choice questions about how best to assess and diagnose the person’s condition. A pop-up patient profile allows users to refer to the information as they continually engage with practical application of the material.

Downloadable clinical resources, including a breathlessness checklist shared care tool and reflective practice audit, are designed to complement the module, and are explained through animations to improve understanding and uptake.

Lung Foundation Australia engaged The Being Group to support the design and development of a Breathlessness Education Package (the e-learning module and its accompanying clinical resources). Leisha was brilliant to work with, and so was the rest of The Being Group team. We had a very tight timeframe to go from content creation to launch date, but The Being Group not only pulled together an exceptional process to keep me informed, but they delivered the final product on time for me to test prior to launch date. Due to their good comprehension of what was required, little change was required post user testing. We are now embarking on our next project together, and I look forward to a continued working relationship.

COPD Online Patient Education

With funding from the Department of Health and Aged Care to improve outcomes for consumers with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), the existing COPD Online Patient Education (C.O.P.E.) program needed to be revamped to reflect current online learning technology and principles. With more than 80% of people with COPD in Australia aged between 55–84 years old, accessibility and ease of use for an audience with lower digital literacy were the key concerns.

Simple, bold e-learning design utilises Lung Foundation Australia brand colours, elements and iconography, and natural stock imagery reflecting the target audience. Large text and clean white space are key features of the 10 slide types originally designed and approved in preparation for use across the series of 6 e-learning modules. Designs included four simple animations that could be reused throughout the program, creating a more dynamic and engaging user experience in a cost-effective way.

Copy supplied by Lung Foundation Australia was then refined and structured to fit within the designed slide types, adding in moments of simple interactivity where appropriate to ensure positive learning outcomes.

Each module begins with an animated video which explains to learners how to use the different interactive elements of the module.

A voice over with clear instructions plays throughout the module for improved accessibility, complete with calming music to round out the audio-visual experience.

Across 6 e-learning modules, users learn what COPD is, how to live well with COPD, how to safely exercise, what to do when feeling breathless, and how to support their mental health with a chronic health condition.

Lung Foundation Australia worked with The Being Group to develop the first online course for people living with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. The Being Group brought a wealth of knowledge and advice about how to design and build a course for people with lower digital literacy that was highly engaging but also easy for the audience to navigate. They were incredibly easy and professional to work with, meeting all project deadlines and producing a beautiful piece of work. They responded promptly to all queries and requests, and were very transparent with all communication. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with The Being Group on this project and are very proud of the product we’ve created together.
